What do you want to work out?

If earlier than the start, it counts as the next day.

For a weekly or monthly total.

How it's calculated

Both times are converted to minutes (hours × 60 + minutes), the difference is taken and the break is subtracted. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift crosses midnight and 24 hours are added. The result is given in hours and minutes and, for payroll and timesheets, in decimal hours (8 h 30 min = 8.5 hours). In the add mode the duration is converted to minutes and added to the start time; anything past 24 hours rolls into the next day.

Minutes
= end − start (+ 1,440 if the end is earlier than the start) − break
Decimal hours
= minutes / 60
Total
= net minutes per day × number of days

Worked example

09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break, 5 days:

  1. 17:30 − 09:00 = 510 min; minus the break 480 min = 8 hours (8 decimal)
  2. 5 days: 480 × 5 = 2,400 min = 40 hours

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

Convert both times to minutes and subtract: 9:00 to 17:30 is 510 minutes; minus a 30-minute break that is 8 hours, or 40 hours over 5 days. The result is shown both as hours and minutes and as decimal hours (8.5).

What happens if the end time is earlier than the start time?

The end is taken as the next day: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. The calculator detects this and flags the result as ending on the following day.

What are decimal hours? How many hours is 7 hours 30 minutes?

Minutes divided by 60: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours; 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33. Payroll and timesheets usually use decimal hours, so multiply this value by your hourly rate.

How do I add a duration to a time?

The duration is converted to minutes and added: 09:30 + 2 hours 45 minutes = 12:15. Results past midnight roll over to the next day, and the calculator shows how many days forward or back.

How do I total my weekly work hours?

Work out the net hours for one day and enter the number of days; the calculator gives the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. For days with different hours, run each day and add them up.

Clock arithmetic only; daylight-saving changes and time-zone differences are not taken into account.
