How it's calculated
The calculator shows two things: the healthy weight range that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, and the classic ideal body weight formulas that give one figure from height and sex. The formulas add a fixed weight for every inch (2.54 cm) over 5 feet (152.4 cm).
Worked example
A woman who is 165 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall:
- Healthy weight range: 50.4 – 68.0 kg (111 – 150 lb)
- Inches over 5 feet: (165 − 152.4) / 2.54 = 4.96
- Devine: 45.5 + 2.3 × 4.96 = 56.9 kg (125 lb)
- Robinson (1983): 57.4 kg (127 lb)
- Hamwi (1964): 56.6 kg (125 lb)
- Broca: 165 − 100 = 65.0 kg (143 lb)

Frequently asked questions
How is ideal weight calculated?
The most useful answer is the weight range that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Alongside it, the Devine, Robinson and Hamwi formulas give a single figure from height and sex, and the Broca rule uses height in cm minus 100.
What is my ideal weight for my height?
For example, a woman who is 165 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall has a healthy range of 50.4 – 68.0 kg (111 – 150 lb) and a Devine ideal weight of 56.9 kg (125 lb). A man who is 180 cm (5 ft 11 in) tall has a range of 60.0 – 80.9 kg and a Devine result of 75.0 kg (165 lb).
Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
There is no single correct formula. Devine, Robinson and Hamwi were derived from older height–weight tables for clinical use such as drug dosing, and they give similar results. As a personal target, the BMI-based healthy range is a wider and more practical guide.
What is the Broca formula?
Broca gives the ideal weight as height in centimetres minus 100: 70 kg for 170 cm. It is popular because it is simple, but it tends to run high for tall people and low for short people.
What if I am shorter than 152.4 cm (5 ft)?
The Devine, Robinson and Hamwi formulas add a fixed amount for every inch over 5 feet (152.4 cm) and are not defined below that height. In that case the calculator shows only the BMI-based healthy range and the Broca result.
Does ideal weight change with age?
These formulas and the BMI range apply to adults regardless of age. Children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific growth charts; for older adults and athletes a doctor's assessment is more reliable.
