How it's calculated

A percentage says how many parts out of 100 an amount represents. This calculator answers the five percentage questions people ask most often: pick the question, then enter the two numbers.

B% of A
= A × B / 100
A as a percent of B
= A / B × 100
Percentage change
= (new − old) / old × 100
Increase by B%
= A × (1 + B / 100)
Decrease by B%
= A × (1 − B / 100)

Worked example

  1. 18% of 1,250: 1,250 × 18 / 100 = 225
  2. 45 as a percent of 180: 45 / 180 × 100 = 25%
  3. Change from 80 to 100: (100 − 80) / 80 × 100 = 25% increase
  4. 750 with 30% off: 750 × 0.70 = 525

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 18% of 1,250 is 1,250 × 18 / 100 = 225.

How do I work out what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 45 is 45 / 180 × 100 = 25% of 180.

How is percentage change calculated?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100: (new − old) / old × 100. A price that goes from 80 to 100 has risen by 25%; one that falls from 100 to 80 has dropped by 20%.

Why doesn't a 20% rise followed by a 20% cut get back to the original price?

Because each percentage is taken from a different amount. 100 plus 20% is 120; 20% of 120 is 24, so the price after the cut is 96, not 100.

How do I calculate a discounted price?

Multiply the price by (1 − discount / 100). A 750 item with 30% off costs 750 × 0.70 = 525; the discount is 225.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

If a rate moves from 40% to 45%, it has risen by 5 percentage points but by 12.5 percent (5 / 40 × 100). Differences between rates are percentage points; relative changes are percent.

Results are rounded to at most four decimal places.
