How it's calculated
The number of days between two dates is the end date minus the start date. Years, months and days follow the calendar, so months of different lengths and leap years are handled correctly.
Worked example
From 1 January 2026 to 24 October 2026:
- Days: 296 days (9 months, 23 days)
- 42 weeks and 2 days; 212 weekdays and 84 weekend days
- Counting the end date too: 297 days
Frequently asked questions
How is the number of days between two dates calculated?
The start date is subtracted from the end date; 29 February in leap years is counted. For example, there are 31 days between 1 January 2026 and 1 February 2026.
Are the start and end dates included?
By default the start day counts and the end day does not, like a calendar difference (1 January → 2 January = 1 day). For leave, notice or contract periods where both ends count, tick “Include the end date” (1 January → 2 January = 2 days).
Does the weekday count exclude public holidays?
No. Weekdays are Monday to Friday; public holidays are not removed because they differ by country. For a working-day count, subtract the holidays that fall in your period.
How are months and years counted?
Full years first, then whole months, then the remaining days, following the calendar. Because months have different lengths, the total days are not simply divided by 30.
How do I count the days until a date?
Enter today as the start date and the target as the end date. If you leave the end date empty the calculator uses today, which also shows how many days have passed since a past date.
Counted in calendar days using your device's date; public holidays are not removed. Results are for guidance only.
