What do you want to work out?

A second discount at the till, applied to the reduced price.

How it's calculated

A discount is taken off as a percentage of the original price. When there are two discounts, each applies to the price left after the one before, so 20% and 10% off make 28% in total, not 30%. With two known prices, the percentage is the difference divided by the original price.

Sale price
= original × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂)
Percent off
= (original − sale) / original × 100
Original price
= sale price / (1 − d)

Worked example

A coat priced at 240, 35% off in the sale, with an extra 10% off at the till:

  1. First discount: 240 × 0.65 = 156.00
  2. Extra discount: 156.00 × 0.90 = 140.40
  3. You save 99.60, which is 41.5% off (not 45%).

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a discount?

Sale price = original price × (1 − percent off / 100). 25% off 80 saves 20.00, so you pay 60.00.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The extra discount applies to the already reduced price: 100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = 72.00. The total discount is 28%, not 30%.

How do I work out the percentage off?

Percent off = (original − sale price) / original × 100. A price cut from 120 to 90 is 25% off.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Original price = sale price / (1 − percent off / 100). An item selling for 45 after 25% off was 60.00. Adding 25% back to the sale price (56.25) gives the wrong answer.

What discount is "buy one, get one free" or "3 for 2"?

On items of the same price, "buy one, get one free" is 50% off the pair, "3 for 2" is 33.3% off the three items, and "second item half price" is 25% off the pair. The saving is spread over everything you buy.

Percentage arithmetic only; promotion terms, minimum spends and sales tax depend on the shop.
