How it's calculated
A systematic investment plan buys mutual fund units with the same amount every month. The calculator follows the convention used by fund-house SIP calculators: each instalment is invested at the start of the month and compounds monthly at the expected annual return divided by 12. With a step-up, the instalment rises by the chosen percentage at the start of every year.
Worked example
₹5,000 a month for 15 years at an expected 12% a year:
- i = 12 / 12 / 100 = 0.01; n = 180 months
- Amount invested: 180 × ₹5,000 = ₹9,00,000
- Estimated maturity value: ₹25,22,880, of which ₹16,22,880 is growth

Frequently asked questions
How are SIP returns calculated?
Each monthly instalment is treated as invested at the start of the month and compounds monthly at the expected annual return divided by 12. The maturity value is the sum of all instalments with their growth. ₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12% means ₹12,00,000 invested and an estimated ₹23,23,391 at the end.
What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up (top-up) SIP raises the instalment by a fixed percentage every year, usually in line with salary growth. Raising the same ₹10,000 SIP by 10% a year would grow it to an estimated ₹33,74,326 after 10 years, on ₹19,12,491 invested.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns depend on the market and change every year; the rate you enter is an assumption, not a promise. Equity funds can fall in value over shorter periods. Use the calculator to compare scenarios, for example 8%, 10% and 12%, rather than to predict one outcome.
How is tax charged when I redeem an equity SIP?
Each instalment is a separate purchase with its own holding period. For equity-oriented funds, units held more than 12 months are long-term: gains above ₹1,25,000 a year are taxed at 12.5%. Units held 12 months or less are short-term and taxed at 20%. So on full redemption the last 12 instalments are usually short-term. Surcharge and cess are extra; debt funds follow different rules.
Is a SIP better than a lump sum?
A lump sum invested at the start has longer to grow, so in a steadily rising market it ends higher. A SIP spreads purchases over time, which buys more units when prices are low and suits money that comes in monthly from salary. Which works better depends on when you have the money and how the market moves.
