How it's calculated

Income tax is charged slab by slab on taxable income: your income less the standard deduction (salaried and pensioners) and, under the old regime, the deductions you claim. The rebate removes the tax for small incomes, surcharge adds a percentage for incomes above ₹50,00,000, and health and education cess of 4% is added to the result. The new regime is the default; the old regime is a choice for those whose deductions make it cheaper.

Taxable income
= income − standard deduction − deductions (old regime)
Slab tax
= Σ (slice of taxable income × slab rate)
Rebate
= slab tax up to ₹60,000 when taxable income ≤ ₹12,00,000 (new regime)
Total tax
= (slab tax − rebate + surcharge) × (1 + 4% cess)

Worked example

A salaried person with ₹15,00,000 a year under the new regime, FY 2026-27:

  1. Taxable income ₹15,00,000 − ₹75,000 = ₹14,25,000
  2. ₹4,00,000 at 5% = ₹20,000
  3. ₹4,00,000 at 10% = ₹40,000
  4. ₹2,25,000 at 15% = ₹33,750
  5. Slab tax ₹93,750 (no rebate above ₹12,00,000) + cess ₹3,750 = ₹97,500

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on a ₹15,00,000 salary in FY 2026-27?

Under the new regime, ₹15,00,000 less the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹14,25,000 of taxable income: slab tax ₹93,750 plus 4% cess ₹3,750 = ₹97,500, an effective rate of 6.5%. Under the old regime the answer depends on the deductions you claim.

What are the new regime slabs for FY 2026-27?

0% up to ₹4,00,000; 5% from ₹4,00,000 to ₹8,00,000; 10% from ₹8,00,000 to ₹12,00,000; 15% from ₹12,00,000 to ₹16,00,000; 20% from ₹16,00,000 to ₹20,00,000; 25% from ₹20,00,000 to ₹24,00,000; 30% above ₹24,00,000. Budget 2026-27 kept these unchanged; the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026.

Up to what income is there no tax?

Under the new regime the rebate (section 87A, now section 156) wipes out tax up to ₹60,000 when taxable income is ₹12,00,000 or less, so a salaried person pays nothing up to ₹12,75,000 of salary. Just above the limit, marginal relief caps the tax at the income over ₹12,00,000: on ₹13,25,000 of salary the tax is ₹50,000 plus cess, ₹52,000. Under the old regime the rebate is ₹12,500 up to ₹5,00,000.

New regime or old regime: which should I choose?

The new regime is the default, with lower rates, a ₹75,000 standard deduction and almost no other deductions. The old regime keeps the ₹50,000 standard deduction plus 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and other claims at higher rates. Enter your deductions under “Old regime” and compare the two totals; you can switch each year if you have no business income.

What are surcharge and cess?

Surcharge is an extra percentage of the tax for high incomes: 10% above ₹50,00,000, 15% above ₹1,00,00,000, 25% above ₹2,00,00,000 (the old regime adds 37% above ₹5,00,00,000), with marginal relief so that crossing a threshold never costs more than the extra income. Health and education cess of 4% is then added to tax plus surcharge.

Does this cover capital gains, business income or TDS?

No. It taxes ordinary income (salary, pension, interest, rent) at slab rates. Capital gains taxed at special rates, presumptive business income and the TDS already deducted are outside this calculator.
