How it's calculated

Both you and your employer contribute 12% of your PF wages (basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance). Your share goes entirely to your provident fund account; of the employer's share, 8.33% of wages up to the ₹25,000 ceiling goes to the pension scheme and the rest to your provident fund. The employer also pays 0.5% for EDLI insurance and 0.5% administrative charges.

PF wage
= min(wages, ₹25,000) unless contributing on full wages
Employee EPF
= PF wage × 12%
Employer EPS
= min(wages, ₹25,000) × 8.33% Employer EPF = PF wage × 12% − EPS
EDLI
= capped wage × 0.5% Admin charges = PF wage × 0.5%

Worked example

PF wages of ₹20,000 a month (EPFO's illustration for the revised ceiling):

  1. Employee: ₹20,000 × 12% = ₹2,400
  2. Employer: EPS ₹20,000 × 8.33% = ₹1,666; EPF ₹2,400 − ₹1,666 = ₹734; EDLI ₹100; admin ₹100
  3. Credited to your accounts: ₹4,800 a month, ₹57,600 a year

Frequently asked questions

How much PF is deducted on ₹20,000 wages?

The employee contributes 12%, ₹2,400 a month. The employer adds ₹2,400: ₹1,666 (8.33%) to the pension scheme and ₹734 to the provident fund, plus ₹100 EDLI and ₹100 admin charges. ₹4,800 a month, ₹57,600 a year, is credited to your EPF and EPS accounts (EPFO's own illustration).

What is the EPF wage ceiling?

₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026 (notification S.O. 5109(E)), up from ₹15,000 since September 2014. Employees whose PF wages (basic pay + DA + retaining allowance) are within the ceiling must be enrolled in EPF, EPS and EDLI; above it, statutory contributions are capped at the ceiling unless you contribute on higher wages by agreement. On ₹40,000 wages the capped employee share is ₹3,000.

How is the employer's 12% split?

8.33% of wages up to the ceiling goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (at most ₹2,082.50 a month) and the balance 3.67% to your EPF account. The Central Government adds 1.16% of wages up to ₹15,000 to EPS (₹174 a month).

What are EDLI and admin charges?

The employer also pays 0.5% of wages up to the ceiling for the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (life cover of up to ₹7 lakh) and 0.5% as EPFO administrative charges. Neither comes out of your pay or into your account.

Does this show my PF balance at retirement?

No. It shows the monthly and yearly contributions. The balance depends on the interest rate EPFO declares each year and on how your wages change, so a projection would be a guess.
