How it's calculated
GST is charged on the price before tax at the rate for the goods or service. Within a state it is collected half as CGST and half as SGST; between states the full rate is IGST. To take GST out of an inclusive price, divide by one plus the rate.
Worked example
₹25,000 before GST at 18%, and ₹25,000 including GST at 5%:
- 18%: GST ₹4,500 (₹2,250 CGST + ₹2,250 SGST) → ₹29,500 including GST
- 5% inclusive: ₹25,000 / 1.05 = ₹23,809.52 before GST → ₹1,190.48 GST

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST on a price?
Multiply the price by the rate. ₹10,000 at 18% carries ₹1,800 GST (₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST within a state, or ₹1,800 IGST between states), so the invoice total is ₹11,800.
How do I remove GST from a total (reverse GST)?
Divide the inclusive amount by 1 + rate. ₹11,800 including 18% GST is ₹10,000 before tax and ₹1,800 GST. Taking 18% of the total would overstate the GST.
What are the GST rates in India?
Since 22 September 2025 there are two main rates, 5% (merit) and 18% (standard), plus 40% for sin and luxury goods; the 12% and 28% slabs were abolished by the 56th GST Council. Special rates continue for gold and jewellery (3%), cut and polished diamonds (1.5%) and rough diamonds (0.25%), and many essentials are nil-rated.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
Within a state the GST is split equally into Central GST and State GST (9% + 9% for an 18% supply). For a supply between states, the whole rate is charged as Integrated GST. The total is the same either way.
Which items are at 40%?
Pan masala, tobacco products, aerated and caffeinated drinks, large cars and motorcycles, yachts, private aircraft and online money gaming, among others. Tobacco items kept their earlier rate plus cess until the compensation cess loans are repaid.
