How it's calculated
Two amounts come off a salary before it reaches you: the employee's EPF contribution, 12% of basic pay plus dearness allowance on wages up to ₹25,000 (or on the full wage where that is agreed), and income tax, which the employer deducts each month as one-twelfth of the year's tax. The calculator works out the year's tax with the standard deduction and divides it by 12.
Worked example
₹1,00,000 gross a month with ₹40,000 basic pay, new regime, PF capped at the ceiling:
- EPF: 12% × ₹25,000 = ₹3,000
- Tax: ₹0 a year on ₹12,00,000 → ₹0 a month
- In hand: ₹1,00,000 − ₹3,000 − ₹0 = ₹97,000

Frequently asked questions
What is the in-hand salary on ₹1,00,000 a month?
With basic pay of ₹40,000 and PF on wages up to the ₹25,000 ceiling, the employee's EPF is ₹3,000 and income tax under the new regime is ₹0 a month (₹0 a year), leaving ₹97,000 in hand before professional tax.
What is deducted from salary in India?
The employee's EPF contribution (12% of basic pay and dearness allowance, on wages up to ₹25,000 unless you and your employer contribute on the full wage), income tax deducted at source each month, and in most states a small professional tax. Employer contributions to EPF and gratuity are part of CTC but never reach your bank account.
Why is my CTC higher than my gross salary?
Cost to company includes the employer's EPF share, gratuity provision, insurance and sometimes variable pay. Enter the monthly gross salary that appears on your payslip, not the CTC.
Is professional tax included?
No. Professional tax is a state levy of up to ₹2,500 a year (about ₹200 a month) in states that charge it, and the slabs differ by state. Subtract your state's amount from the result.
Why does my payslip differ?
Employers spread the year's tax over the months from the declarations you make, and some adjust it in the last months of the year. HRA exemption, LTA and other components also depend on your salary structure. The calculator applies the standard deduction and, under the old regime, the deductions you enter.
