How it's calculated

Income tax is worked out on your taxable income for the year (1 July to 30 June) with the ATO's progressive rates: each slice of income is taxed at its own rate. The Medicare levy of 2% is added, the low income tax offset is subtracted, and if you have a study loan the compulsory HELP repayment is added.

Income tax
= Σ (income in bracket × bracket rate) − LITO
Medicare levy
= taxable income × 2% (phased in above $28,011.00 for singles)
HELP
= repayment income × repayment rate (compulsory repayment)
Total
= income tax + Medicare levy + HELP
Effective
= total / taxable income Marginal = rate on the next dollar

The result is an annual figure. Tax withheld from a salary through the year is an estimate of this amount; the difference is settled when you lodge your tax return.

Worked example

An Australian resident with $100,000.00 of taxable income and no study loan:

  1. $18,200.00 at 0% = $0.00
  2. $26,800.00 at 15% = $4,020.00
  3. $55,000.00 at 30% = $16,500.00
  4. Income tax: $20,520.00 (LITO $0.00 at this income)
  5. Medicare levy: $100,000.00 × 2% = $2,000.00
  6. Total $22,520.00; income after tax $77,480.00; effective rate 22.5%; marginal rate 30%

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on $100,000.00 in 2026–27?

A resident with $100,000.00 of taxable income pays $20,520.00 income tax plus $2,000.00 Medicare levy, $22,520.00 in total, leaving $77,480.00. The effective rate is 22.5% and the marginal rate 30%.

What are the 2026–27 tax brackets?

Residents pay nothing on the first $18,200.00, then 15% to $45,000.00, 30% to $135,000.00, 37% to $190,000.00 and 45% above that. The second bracket fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026; the thresholds did not change.

Is the Medicare levy included?

Yes. The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income on top of income tax. Singles earning up to $28,011.00 pay no levy and it phases in at 10 cents per dollar until $35,013.00 (the latest legislated thresholds, 2025–26). Family and seniors reductions and the Medicare levy surcharge are not applied.

What is the low income tax offset?

LITO is up to $700.00 off your tax if your taxable income is $37,500.00 or less. It tapers by 5 cents per dollar to $45,000.00 and by 1.5 cents per dollar until it ends at $66,667.00. It is applied automatically and cannot create a refund.

How is the HELP (HECS) repayment calculated?

For 2026–27, no compulsory repayment is due up to $69,528.00 of repayment income. Above that you repay 15% of the amount over $69,528.00, then $9,028.00 plus 17% of the amount over $129,717.00, and from $186,051.00 a flat 10% of your whole repayment income. This calculator uses taxable income as repayment income.

Do foreign residents pay the same tax?

No. Foreign residents for tax purposes have no tax-free threshold and pay 30% from the first dollar up to $135,000.00, then the same 37% and 45% rates. They do not pay the Medicare levy and do not get LITO. Choose “Foreign resident” to see those figures.
