How it's calculated

Under the National Employment Standards, full-time and part-time employees are entitled to 4 weeks of paid annual leave for each year of service, based on their ordinary hours (Fair Work Act 2009, s 87). Leave accrues progressively from the first day and unused leave carries over.

Leave per year
= ordinary hours per week × 4
Accrued
= leave per year × days of service / 365
Balance
= accrued − leave already taken

Service is counted in calendar days from the start date to the chosen date, both days included. Unpaid leave and other periods that do not count as service are not deducted.

Worked example

A full-time employee (38 hours a week) after 182 days of service:

  1. Leave per year: 38 × 4 = 152 hours
  2. Accrued: 152 × 182 / 365 = 75.8 hours, about 1.99 weeks

Frequently asked questions

How much annual leave do I get in Australia?

Full-time and part-time employees get 4 weeks of paid annual leave for each year of service under the National Employment Standards, based on their ordinary hours. For a 38-hour week that is 152 hours a year; for 20 hours a week, 80 hours. Casual employees do not get paid annual leave.

How does annual leave accrue?

Progressively through the year, from the first day, in proportion to the ordinary hours you work. This calculator accrues the yearly entitlement evenly over the days of service: a full-time employee builds up roughly 2.9 hours a week. Unused leave carries over from year to year.

Do shiftworkers get more leave?

Some do. An award or enterprise agreement can give shiftworkers an extra week (5 weeks in total). The calculator uses the standard 4 weeks; add the extra week yourself if your award provides it.

Is annual leave loading included?

No. Leave loading (often 17.5%) is paid under many awards and agreements when you take leave, but it is not part of the NES entitlement in hours. Check your award for whether it applies to you.

What happens to annual leave when I leave a job?

Untaken annual leave must be paid out at the end of employment at the rate you would have received had you taken the leave. The accrued balance from this calculator is a starting point; your payslip or employer's record is the official figure.
