How it's calculated

The minimum wage is set by the Government each year under the Minimum Wage Act 1983 and usually changes on 1 April. It is an hourly rate; weekly and annual figures follow from your hours.

Weekly
= hours per week × $23.95 (adult) or $19.16 (starting-out, training)
Fortnightly
= weekly × 2 Monthly = weekly × 52 / 12 Annual = weekly × 52

Worked example

An adult working 40 hours a week on the minimum wage:

  1. Per week: 40 × $23.95 = $958.00
  2. Per fortnight $1,916.00; per month $4,151.33; per year $49,816.00
