How it's calculated
Each province and territory sets its own minimum wage, and it covers almost every employee who works there. The federal rate of $18.15 applies only to federally regulated jobs, and those employees get the higher of the federal and the provincial rate. The calculator takes the general adult rate and multiplies it by your weekly hours.
Worked example
A full-time minimum wage job in Ontario, 40 hours a week:
- $17.95 × 40 = $718.00 a week
- $718.00 × 52 = $37,336.00 a year, or $3,111.33 a month, before tax, CPP and EI

Frequently asked questions
What is the federal minimum wage in Canada?
$18.15 an hour since April 1, 2026, up from $17.75. It applies only to federally regulated jobs such as banks, airlines, railways, telecoms and interprovincial trucking. Where the province's rate is higher, those employees get the higher rate. Everyone else is covered by their province's minimum wage.

Nunavut at $20.17 an hour. Among the provinces, British Columbia is highest at $18.25. The lowest is Alberta at $15.00.
What is the minimum wage in Ontario?

When does the minimum wage go up next?
Most jurisdictions index their rate to inflation once a year: the federal rate, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Yukon on April 1, Quebec on May 1, British Columbia on June 1, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut on September 1, and Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island on October 1. Prince Edward Island has already set $17.60 from April 1, 2027.
How is the yearly pay worked out?
Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. A month is 52 ÷ 12 weeks, so about 4.33 weeks, not 4. The figures are before income tax, CPP and EI; vacation pay and statutory holiday pay come on top.
