How it's calculated
Canada charges a 5% federal GST everywhere. Five provinces fold their provincial part into a single HST; British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge a separate provincial tax on the same pre-tax price; Alberta and the three territories charge GST only. To take tax out of a total, divide by one plus the combined rate.
Worked example
$250.00 before tax in British Columbia, and $250.00 including tax in Ontario:
- BC: GST $12.50 + PST $17.50 = $30.00 → $280.00 including tax
- Ontario: $250.00 / 1.13 = $221.24 before tax → $28.76 HST

Frequently asked questions
How much is sales tax in Ontario?
13% HST, a single tax combining the 5% federal GST and 8% provincial part. On a $100.00 price the HST is $13.00, for a total of $113.00.
Which provinces use HST?
New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland and Labrador (15%), Nova Scotia (14%), Ontario (13%), Prince Edward Island (15%). Elsewhere the 5% GST applies, with a separate provincial sales tax in British Columbia (7% PST), Saskatchewan (6% PST), Manitoba (7% RST) and Quebec (9.975% QST); Alberta and the territories charge GST only.
How do I take tax out of a total?
Divide the total by one plus the combined rate. In Ontario, $113.00 including HST is $100.00 before tax and $13.00 HST. Taking 13% of the total would overstate the tax.
Is QST charged on top of GST?
Not any more. Since 2013 the QST (9.975%) is calculated on the price before GST, the same base as the GST, so the combined rate in Quebec is 14.975%.
What is exempt or zero-rated?
Basic groceries, prescription drugs and most medical devices are zero-rated for GST/HST; residential rent, most health care and financial services are exempt. Provincial sales taxes have their own exemptions. The calculator assumes a fully taxable sale.
